Top 10 New Movies for Christmas 2012

December 19th, 2012

Christmas is a season of cheer, for children and for the whole family. This is the time of the year where movies bring its viewers to some land of fantasy where good cheer and values come into play. This year is not an exception. Below are the top 10 new movies for Christmas 2012.

  1. Life of PI – a movie about survival. The main character Pi Patel, a zookeeper son, fight to keep his entourage alive in a single boat in the middle of the ocean. It would have been easier if his companions are humans – but no, he has to keep assorted animals live (himself too) for him to tell a tale.
  2. Django Unchained – a film by Quentin Tarantino starring Jamie Foxx as the main character Django. Django is a slave who is an unlikely companion of a bounty hunter.
  3. The Merry Graingers – is for a more fun and relaxing family afternoon movie marathon. This is a comedy film revolving around a family spending Christmas together. It shouldn’t be a strange setup only that they haven’t seen each other for seven years due to misunderstandings.
  4.  Seven Psychopaths – stars Colin Farell who found himself involved in shih-tzu ‘dognapping’. Here he gets to meet a lot of unstable characters.
  5. Great Expectations – base from the classic novel of Charles Dickens, the movie is one of the season movie releases and is expecting some great screen success.
  6. Jack Reacher – another Tom Cruise movie with the hopes of reaching the success of his last year’s movie. This one is about a military man set to capture a deadly gunman who killed 5 innocent people in a seemingly random shooting case.
  7. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – set in a time before Lord of the Rings, the young Bilbo Baggins (younger than when he was in Lord of the Rings)  who set out with Dwarves on a journey (very unhobbit-like practice) to reclaim Erebor, the lost Kingdom of Dwarves.
  8. Rise of the Guardians – this is an ultimate kiddie Christmas movie. The villains expectedly creating havoc in a joyous season and the guardians, including St. Nick, raise arms to prevent chaos from reigning all over the earth.
  9. Home Alone 5: The Holiday Heist – this can be considered now as a classic fun family movie for Christmas. And although this might not be as good as the original film, its lead star Christian Martyn is cute enough to make the movie fun to watch.
  10. The most wonderful time – a movie about family and Christmas chaos.

Netflix Buys DVD.com Domain

March 31st, 2012

Netflix has announced that it was splitting its DVD/Blu-ray-by-mail service off from its streaming video service and expecting its DVD-rental business to decline not long ago. However, it’s reported by Domain Name Wire that Netflix has acquired the DVD.com domain name. Now DVD.com redirects Netflix’s signup page for DVD subscriptions.

Netflix said that this acquisition aimed to improve use experience of its DVD rental business in the United States as one Netflix representative said, “In the U.S. we look to provide a great experience for our members, those who have DVD only, streaming only and those who have both.” Obviously, Netflix is trying a new solution to make everyone happy after its hated Qwikster split. Under Netflix’s new plan, user ratings will be shared by both sites. And Netflix won’t show any result for those who don’t use the DVD subscription to search movies while DVD-only results will be shown to those who have subscribed to the DVD service. This mean now DVD users have their own website to order their DVDs instead of having to navigate through the Netflix site that is full of streaming promotions.

Why Netflix focuses so much at its DVD business now? In fact, the DVD business is more lucrative than online streaming video service at present. According to a report, Netflix had 11.1 million DVD subscribers in Q4 2011. These DVD consumers contribute a revenue of $370 million while Netflix make only $476 million from 21.6 million streaming video subscribers.

Online Video Will Surpass DVD and Blu-ray this Year

March 30th, 2012

According to a research conducted by HIS, Americans will watch more movies online in 2012 than they will on DVD or Blu-ray. HIS reported that the online movie consumption will be increased to 3.4 billion views or transactions at the end of this year while the consumption of DVD and Blu-ray may be just 2.4 billion views.

This figure means that online video will experience a real outbreak period because not long ago, Telecompetitor reported that Americans watched only 1.4 billion movies from online sites. Increase by over 135 percent in 2012? Is that possible? Considering the current situation of online video business, it’s likely that online video consumption will achieve that “goal”. Of course, Netflix is still the leader in online video business will contribute much to reach that figure. Following are Amazon, Verizon and Redbox, Hulu, UltraViolet, Dish Network, HBO Go, etc.

And it’s clear that DVD and Blu-ray will still have a place in the market the same as CDs (MP3 has led to the decrease of CD). But in general, watching videos online is still a better way to get access to video entertainment, especially for young people and those who have good networks.

Wal-Mart Launches Disc-to-digital Conversion Service

March 14th, 2012

If youre willing to pay an extra fee, now you can play your DVD movies on your iPad, iPhone, iPod, Android, etc. with Wal-Mart’s new launched “Disc-to-digital” service.

On Tuesday, Wal-Mart said that starting April 16, Wal-Mart customers will be able to convert their DVDs to digital copies that can be streamed on Internet-connected devices like TVs, tablets, game consoles, smartphones, etc. by paying $2 to $5 for each. This service is currently backed by five studios: Paramount, Sony, Fox, Universal and Warner Bros.

This disc-to-digital service will allows Wal-Mart consumers to watch the DVD movies they purchased on lots of portable devices while keeping the original DVD discs with just a little extra money.

This service is powered by Wal-Mart’s video streaming technology subsidiary Vudu. To use this service, customers need to create a Vudu account because the digital copies are stored in Vudu. This disc-to-digital service marks Wal-Mart’s support of UltraViolet, the online movie technology supported by many big movie studios and technology companies. Wal-Mart’s support of UltraViolet will definitely provide a boost to UltraViolet and help it compete with Apple’s iCoud movie service. The five big movie studios said that Wal-Mart’s backing was a great advance for UltraViolet and the disc-to-digital option will acclimate consumers to store DVD movies on line.

Consumers can just take their DVD discs to Wal-Mart photo centers and the employees will add the digital copy version to Vudu. Consumers then can access to the digital copies by logging into Vudu. At present, not every DVD movie can be converted because the movie studios don’t have the digital copies of all movies they provide. Just note that DVD rented from Redbox, Netflix, Blockbuster, etc. won’t be accepted. To rip Redbox and Netflix DVD rentals, you can refer to Rip Redbox DVD Rentals or Rip Netflix DVD.

Apple iCloud Now Supports Movies

March 12th, 2012

Apple announced its iCloud movie service on March 7, letting iTunes owners get access to their purchased content on any Apple device more conveniently, especially those who own an Apple TV set-top box. All the movies consumers purchased from iTunes will be stored in the cloud and they can stream and re-download the content to their iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, easily and quickly.

It’s reported the iCloud movie service covers not only new purchases, but also movies purchased before. Currently, content from Disney, Sony, Paramount, Warner and Lionsgate can be stored in the cloud while content from other big studios like Universal and Fox won’t be accessible via iCloud because of some distribution deals.

Apple’s iCloud movie service is very similar to UltraViolet, a platform that allows consumers to watching the streaming version of their purchased DVD movies on numerous authorized devices. Now Apple undoubtedly poses a threat to the growing UltraViolet cloud movie service.

On March 7, Apple also announced its updated version of Apple TV that features a major software upgrade. Besides the almost new use interface, now iTunes users can stream videos, movies, music and TV shows through the device via iCloud.
